  • How You Can Help HFBA

    Make a tax-deductible donation
Our most pressing and ongoing need is the need for funds to be able to continue our important work. Those who need our services are too poor to afford a burial and any possible government stipend for indigent burial does not cover our actual cost.

Our graves need to be marked and our cemeteries maintained.  Our small office staff and rabbi diligently work long hours with the utmost sensitivity and consideration for those who turn to us.

Many companies offer matching gifts to employees.  Please consider sending a matching gift form with your donation.  Doing so is an easy way for you to enhance your donation to HFBA.

The following are some additional fundraising ideas we hope you will consider:

    • Place HFBA tzedakah boxes in your home or in a house of shiva, school, or local Jewish establishment.

    • Celebrate a simcha, commemorate a loss, or wish someone a speedy recovery with HFBA cards. Cards require a donation of at least $10 and can include a personalized message.

    • By including your child in HFBA's Bar/Bat Mitzvah Circle, your guests can make donations in your child's honor. The generous child who shares his/her simcha in this way receives a framed certificate.

    • Donate your property, used vehicle, or boat to HFBA.
Donate your vehicle to the Hebrew Free Burial Association (HFBA).
    • Establish an HFBA Forever Gift Annuity or Charitable Trust Plan. In addition to the guaranteed income and tax benefits, these plans ensure that HFBA's promise of a Jewish burial to future generations of indigent Jews will be fulfilled.

    • Remember HFBA in your will with a bequest.

    • Receive an annual Yahrzeit reminder letter.  A donation sent in memory of a loved one, with the appropriate information, will ensure that HFBA will send you an annual Yahrzeit reminder.

    • Leave Your Mark by sponsoring a grave marker for an unmarked grave at $150 each, you will receive a framed certificate. Sponsor four markers and a plaque with your name will be added to our roster in the Weinberg Chapel at Mt. Richmond Cemetery.

    • Institute a Perpetual Yahrzeit Kaddish for your loved one for a $180 donation.

    • Sponsor Perpetual Grave Care for an indigent's grave for $600.

    Volunteer at HFBA

Volunteer opportunities include participating in our
Cemetery Clean Up Project, where you would help clean and maintain our cemeteries. Perhaps your synagogue, women's organization, JCC or school could organize a group to participate.

Previous groups have included those from HAFTR, MTA, TABC and Stella K. Abraham high schools, the Great Neck Synagogue, a Young Judea group and a contingent from the JCC of Staten Island, among others.

Other volunteer opportunities include helping out in our office organizing our records and doing other clerical tasks and offering to drive visitors to the cemeteries to visit the grave of their friends and family members.

For more information about HFBA's volunteer opportunities, please contact Andrew Parver, HFBA's Director of Education and Outreach, at aparver@hebrewfreeburial.org.
